Only
chance I could have ever had, being from San Diego, CA...The
Style Council played 4 shows in the US in 1984 (I think),
two in L.A. and two in N.Y....I drove with a friend...not to
N.Y. :) We sat in the far back, balcony, stage left, last
row, last seats. We knew no TSC songs--just a little bit
from listening to a cassette during the trip up (2.5
hrs)--only all The Jam albums. Of course being "ignorant
colonials" we kept shouting for different songs by The
Jam...Sorry Paul! It was also melancholy for me as I'm a
huge fan of The Jam and The Kinks (must be my English
heritage pre-1636 A.D. ya know) and I'd never had a chance;
nor would I ever get a chance to see them. Though I have
recently got a copy of the Dusseldorf 1980 show on
RockPalast. Cheers to All! |

Seeing
him during his Days of Speed acoustic tour at The House of
Blues club in Los Angeles, Following the show, I happened to
be standing in a hallway between the club and the outdoor
"smoking patio", when Weller emerged and headed down the
hallway to leave. He was being escorted by some pretty large
club bouncers. I saw him and he saw me. I was amazed, and I
swear HE stopped his entourage and reached over to shake my
hand. We kind of "missed hands", but even though he was
being urged on by the escorts, stopped and made sure we
shook. A great real moment and I don't know why he stopped,
as I was leaning back against the wall to make room for the
group to pass. It was almost as though he recognized me. All
I can think is that he picked up on the vibe that I'm a
sincere fan, or that maybe the fact that by pure
coincidence, each of us was wearing a similar, mod-looking
white jacket. But his powerful music, his integrity to his
influences and how he has always charted his own path
musically continue to impress me. Thanks Paul--there are a
few of us here in the States that "get it"! And cheers to
all Weller fans! |

Best Gig
= Hammersmith Palais, 14 Dec 1981 the one that the live
version of Town Called Malice was recorded at. My ticket
stub tells me Bananarama were the support band but I don't
remember them playing. Other fave moment/gig was Weller in
Reading in late 97 just before I emigrated. He was off his
face on the beer but still put on a cracking show. Also I
went to see Paul's "respond" record label bands at Kingston
Polytechnic in 1983 and was in the loo when I noticed that
standing next to me at the urinal was John Weller. Needless
to say my hush puppies have never recovered. |
